The best coming of age films of all time
Coming of age movies have a special place in the hearts of many. Whether they helped you get through your tough teenage years or they remind you of your youth, this unique genre is one of the most popular around.
If you’re sitting at home on a rainy afternoon looking for something to keep you entertained, why not log on to your streaming service and see if any of these classics are up for grabs?
Stand By Me (1986)
Stand By Me has to be one of the most iconic coming of age films of all time.
Starring the late, great River Phoenix, the movie tells the story of four teenage boys who go on a hike to find the body of a missing child.
During their adventure, the boys help each other to overcome obstacles, share their stories and learn a lot about themselves. Epitomising the free spirit of adolescence, the film is a must watch for anyone planning an adventure.
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Though they weren’t famous at the time, many of the cast from this 90s classic have gone on to be big names in their own right. Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck are two of the best known, though you’ll spot a few other famous faces in the crowd.
Though nothing dramatic really happens during the film, Dazed and Confused brilliantly captures its subjects on the cusp of adulthood. Following a group of high school students on the last day of term, the film will make you instantly nostalgic for your school days.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Though not strictly speaking a coming of age film, Dirty Dancing incorporates many aspects of the genre.
Set in the summer of 1963, Dirty Dancing follows Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman as she meets and falls in love with dance instructor Johnny. Like many of the best coming of age films, Dirty Dancing takes you back to a simpler time when young love really seemed to matter.
Boyhood is the product of a long standing collaboration between director Richard Linklater and his cast. Filmed in real time over 12 years, the movie follows Mason Evens, Jr. as he turns from a boy into an adolescent.
As all the cast retained their roles for the duration of the shoot, the audience is allowed to see how each character grows and develops over the years.
If this has got you in the mood to enjoy a cinematic spectacle, now’s the perfect time to draw the curtains, pop the popcorn and put your feet up in front of a great movie.
