Over the last few years, smartphone manufacturers seem to have been under the impression that bigger is better. Screens have got steadily larger with some modern handsets now looking more like tablet computers than mobile phones. However, Apple has decided to buck the trend, opting instead to release a pocket-sized smartphone, the iPhone SE.

With a screen measuring just four inches, the iPhone SE will be the first phone to have a screen smaller than 4.7 inches since the launch of the iPhone 6 in September 2014. So what will the iPhone SE bring to the smartphone table and will we see all manufacturers shun enormous screens and switch to fun sized phones?

Why a smaller phone?

Apple claim that they have been inundated with requests for smaller handsets in the last few years. As a lot of people started out with the smaller style iPhones that existed before the iPhone 6 hit the market, many consumers want to stick with these nifty devices and free up space in their bags and pockets for more important things.

As well as bucking the size trend, the iPhone SE also bucks Apple’s naming trend. Though the exact reasons behind the name haven’t been disclosed, many people see it as a reference to the Macintosh SE computer which was released back in 1987.

The phone will be Apple’s most powerful four-inch handset ever released with capabilities similar to the iPhone 6S. The handset will contain a NFC chip with support for Apple Pay and a 12-megapixel camera of a similar spec to the tech giant’s 2015 iPhone releases.

Apple seem very keen to show that size doesn’t matter when it comes to power. The iPhone SE will have double the processing power of the iPhone 5S and four times the older model’s graphics performance, the device will also have a longer battery life, something that’s great news for those who like to spend hours and hours on their smartphone.

If you’re keen to get your hands on the iPhone SE, you’ll only have to wait a few more days as the device is set for release on the 31st March. With almost no competition in the smartphone market, this small but powerful device could well develop a loyal following before the year is done.
